Describing himself as “American painter of signs”, Robert Indiana gained international renown in the early 1960’s.
His Alphabets, as his “EAT”, “HOPE”, and “LOVE” that Indiana called “sculptural poems”, are characterized by a brilliant graphic style devoted now to the entire American alphabet. This new work, presented on paper and canvas, is bold in colour and assumes a striking complex simplicity.
Indiana’s artwork has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world. In September 2013, the Whitney Museum of American Art opened “Robert Indiana: Beyond LOVE,” the artist’s first retrospective in New York.
