ARTURO CALCE
DEPARTING ART
VENEZIA
20 FEBBRAIO - 15 MAGGIO 2024

DEPARTING ART
VENICE
20 FEBRUARY - 15 MAY 2024

Venetian artist Arturo Calce, with his project 'Departing Art' on display from 20 February to 15 May 2024 at the Marco Polo Airport in Venice, leads the way to the 60th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia.
Organised by the British art gallery Cris Contini Contemporary in collaboration with the SAVE Group, which manages the intercontinental airport of Venice, the exhibition includes nine works created on plexiglass, eight of which will be displayed in the air terminal and one in the terminal dedicated to private flights.

The protagonist of this artistic production by Arturo Calce is the female figure, represented by nine women of different nationalities, portrayed in different contexts. The performers in this exhibition hold different stories and experiences, creating an ideal thread between the many different cultures and experiences that pass through an airport, which is by definition a place of passage and 'exchange'.
The installations in this exhibition are part of the corpus of "immaterial paintings" for which the artist is recognised, created on plexiglass plates using spray cans.

Arturo Calce's technique is a complex one that requires 'reverse' work; a tactile and intricate process that consists of administering layers of colour pigments from the back of the image, following an inverse process to that of the painter on the canvas. These back-painted plates with sharp shapes on a transparent support are technically and conceptually unique and allow for a rare circulation of light and energy. The painting work, originally two-dimensional, opens up to a second dimension and takes on depth thanks to the transparent plate.
Straddling pop art and expressionism, the use of spray painting brings it closer to street art while remaining aligned to living art, interior art.

Arturo Calce says: 'the sinuous shapes and the energy of the colours in my works represent a timeless time, which goes beyond geographical and cultural barriers', while gallery owners Cristian Contini and Fulvio Granocchia claim that 'the women portrayed in Calce's works are not mere subjects but real travelling companions who crowd the airport. Through their looks, postures and gestures, they tell stories, arouse emotions and open windows onto different inner worlds and experiences'.
At the end of the event, the work 'Elle' will be donated to the SAVE Group.
