Overview
MARGINALIA, Fabio Imperiale

'They are figures that appear mysterious to us: their secret is revealed by the artist through his writing. The colours are those of earth and dust, the tint par excellence of memory'

Female resilience, determination and solidarity are the protagonists of Fabio Imperiale's new artistic project.
On the occasion of the month dedicated to women, the Luciana Matalon Foundation in Milan is hosting, from 17 November to 1 December 2023, Marginalia, an exhibition by artist Fabio Imperiale, curated by Sandra Sanson with a critical text by Vera Agosti and Pasquale Lettieri.
The exhibition, promoted by Cris Contini Contemporary di Cristian Contini and Fulvio Granocchia, is realised with the collaboration of Circle Dynamic Luxury Magazine and the participation of Scarpetta Rossa APS.

Twenty women, one from each Italian region, entrust their testimony to the artist, in the context of as many artistic residencies.
Twenty female portraits for an unprecedented fresco of our country that touches on different areas, from nature to the family, from work to social work, up to raising public awareness on issues such as women's self-determination, gender equality and women's empowerment, fundamental tools for promoting change.
Artists, sportswomen, entrepreneurs, shepherds, dockworkers, activists, singles, girlfriends, wives, mothers, women bearers of an extraordinary normality. A story that crosses Italy, crossing its borders with the portrait of Princess.

Convinced that art should read the surrounding reality and return a vision of it capable of stimulating emotions and reflections, Fabio Imperiale spent several days in the homes of the protagonists, talking to them and delving into their stories. From each residence came a portrait, painted with coffee, ink and bitumen on a collage of old postcards composed by the artist together with his guest and subsequently mounted on a panel. Accompanying the painting, also the words of the artist, collected in a travel diary.
The woman's body, which has always been central to the artist's research, is rendered through an intimate, delicate yet extremely powerful figuration. Each work contains, in fact, an interweaving of lives: the world of the protagonist, the artist's feelings, the fragments of memory that surface from the old postcards, encouraging a broader reflection on society, art and human connection.
The title of the exhibition - Marginalia - refers to the set of annotations that, before the invention of printing, were made in the margins of the manuscript. A choice that underlines Fabio Imperiale's desire to move gracefully through people's lives, leafing through them with care and jotting down his reflections in the margins, to write his own history of history.
