Michelangelo Galliani – Astrale
Curated by Vera Agosti
27 June – 30 August 2026
Specola, former Astronomical Observatory and State Archives of Verbania Pallanza
The Municipality of Verbania is pleased to present Astrale, a solo exhibition by Michelangelo Galliani, curated by Vera Agosti, in collaboration with Cris Contini Contemporary (London, Rome and Brussels) and Galleria Giovanni Bonelli (Milan, Pietrasanta, Lucca, and Canneto sull’Oglio, Mantua), at the Specola – Observatory for Contemporary Art – and the State Archives of Verbania Pallanza.
With this new solo exhibition, featuring symbolic and iconic works, Michelangelo Galliani pays tribute to the dual role that the Specola of Verbania Pallanza has acquired over time: once an astronomical observatory, it is now an observatory for contemporary art.
Sculpted in Carrara statuary marble, Nebula lyrically recalls an ancient polyptych, displaying the image of an interstellar cloud captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. Here, past and present merge: the evocative forms and materials of antiquity are used to represent the latest scientific discoveries. Similarly, Landscape draws inspiration from medieval wooden polyptychs, carving the sinuous lines of nature in low relief on Carrara statuary marble.
In Postcard from Istanbul, the tall bronze column evokes those of the Roman basilica in the magnificent Ottoman city. In this case, however, the vertical architectural element—a poetic axis between earth and sky—is broken and rests upon a fragment of a face carved in black marble, laid on stainless steel. It becomes a symbol of the transience of matter, a reflection on time and memory expressed through the distinctly contemporary juxtaposition of different materials, so beloved by the artist.
Lassù, carved in white marble and placed on the lawn surrounding the Specola, depicts an arm raised toward the sky, a finger pointing to the stars, reminding us never to stop looking upward—especially amid the frenzy of contemporary life—and to remember the mystery of what is greater than ourselves. Recreated in black marble and installed in the garden of the State Archives, it engages in dialogue with the light and shadows of the historic loggia. The title is evocative and gives full meaning to the work. Each viewer is free to interpret it as they wish: as an invitation to reflect on metaphysics, the celestial vault, or the indication of a distant point.

The work, realized with the support of Cris Contini Contemporary, depicts a fragment of a human face and a branch resting on a horizontal base, evoking the non finito tradition of Donatello, Rodin and Michelangelo Buonarroti.
