Civico Planetario Ulrico Hoepli di Milano, Corso Venezia 57, 20121 Milano MI Italy www.planetariodimilano.it
The Civico Planetario di Milano "U. Hoepli" presents Cosmogonia (2025), a bronze and lead sculpture by Michelangelo Galliani, on display at the museum's entrance from 7 July to 30 August 2026.
The work accompanies Astrale, Galliani's solo exhibition curated by Vera Agosti at the Specola — former Astronomical Observatory of Verbania, now a contemporary art space — and the Archivio di Stato di Verbania Pallanza. The event is made possible with the support of Cris Contini Contemporary, London, Rome and Brussels.
Measuring 40 × 40 × 50 cm, Cosmogonia depicts a fragment of a human face and a branch resting on a horizontal base. The deliberately unfinished form recalls the non finito tradition of Donatello, Rodin and Michelangelo Buonarroti. The lead — dark, dense, marked by white oxidations — evokes the imagery of deep space as seen through the Hubble Telescope: stars glimmering against an infinite darkness.
In Galliani's words: "Cosmogonia represents the initial phase of a transformative process — a moment of immersion in dark matter, where form dissolves to allow a new awareness to emerge."
