CONJECTURES AND REFUTATIONS: JEFF ROBB AT CRIS CONTINI CONTEMPORARY LONDON

 

Conjectures and Refutations takes its title from Karl Popper’s theory of knowledge: the idea that truth is never final, but always provisional — tested, challenged, and open to revision.

In this spirit, Jeff Robb presents two significant bodies of work from his recent practice: Human Collage and Conjectures and Refutations, both centred on the instability of perception.

 

In Human Collage, fragmented figures emerge through layered cut-outs that merge abstraction and realism. The segmented bodies suggest introspection and vulnerability, evoking an identity constructed through layers, memories, and shifting self-perceptions. The monochromatic palette heightens contrast and emotional intensity, encouraging viewers to look beyond the surface.

 

With Conjectures and Refutations, Robb shifts towards a more perceptual and spatial investigation. Concentric chromatic fields radiate outward with meditative precision, while at their centre a lenticular image transforms as the viewer moves. The work resists a fixed reading: it shifts, fractures, and withholds itself. Visual “truth” becomes contingent on position, time, and motion.

 

Through lenticular technology, Robb turns the act of looking into an active process of testing and inquiry. Conjecture and Refutation ultimately invites viewers to question not only what they see, but how they come to believe what they see.

In questo spirito, Jeff Robb presenta due importanti nuclei di lavori della sua recente ricerca: Human Collage e Conjectures and Refutations, entrambi incentrati sull’instabilità della percezione.

In Human Collage, figure frammentate emergono attraverso ritagli sovrapposti che fondono astrazione e realismo. I corpi segmentati suggeriscono introspezione e vulnerabilità, evocando un’identità costruita per stratificazioni, memorie e percezioni di sé in continua evoluzione. La palette monocromatica intensifica contrasti ed emotività, incoraggiando lo spettatore ad andare oltre la superficie.

Con Conjectures and Refutations, Robb si orienta verso un’indagine più percettiva e spaziale. Campi cromatici concentrici si irradiano verso l’esterno con precisione meditativa, mentre al centro un’immagine lenticolare si trasforma al mutare del punto di vista. L’opera resiste a una lettura stabile: cambia, si frammenta, si sottrae. La “verità” visiva diventa così dipendente dalla posizione, dal tempo e dal movimento.

Attraverso la tecnologia lenticolare, Robb trasforma l’atto del guardare in un processo attivo di verifica e indagine. Conjectures and Refutations invita infine il pubblico a interrogarsi non solo su ciò che vede, ma su come arriva a credere a ciò che vede.
