Overview
UNDERGROUND FEVER, MICHELANGELO GALLIANI

In the evocative setting of The Crypt Gallery beneath St Pancras Church, London, Cris Contini Contemporary presents ‘Underground Fever’, the latest exhibition by the Italian sculptor Michelangelo Galliani

MICHELANGELO GALLIANI - UNDERGROUND FEVER

The exhibition, organized in conjunction with Frieze London, benefits from the critical contribution of Professor Pasquale Lettieri, who already presented the artist at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022.
Michelangelo Galliani presents a compelling collection, one that synthesizes a series of artworks spanning recent years alongside some previously unreleased pieces, all imbued with a profound spiritual essence. In light of the evocative setting, the artist aspires to establish a profound dialogue between two dimensions: the realms of life and death.
Historically, crypts have served as not only burial sites but also places where boundaries between the living and the departed seem to merge, offering a fleeting opportunity for the living to reconnect with those who have transitioned to another realm. The sculptural compositions conceived by Galliani for this exhibition seek to foster this dialogue, bridging the gap between these dimensions and engaging with the remnants of what once was. In doing so, they remind us of the vastness and enigma of the cosmos, perpetually undergoing rebirth. It is a testament to the enduring cycle of existence, where all that feeds the depths of the Earth inevitably resurfaces, albeit in diverse forms.
This profound concept finds tangible expression in artworks like 'Vanitas', which features intricately crafted skulls in various marbles, from which life springs forth anew, symbolized by the blossoming of a fresh branch.
The exhibition's itinerary gracefully meanders through the chambers and passageways of the crypt. In addition to the aforementioned artworks, the exhibit features others created from different marbles, harmoniously merging with, and in some instances, ingeniously incorporating the very elements of the space itself. Visitors will also have the opportunity to engage with explanatory videos, shedding light on various aspects of the genesis of marble artworks – from the initial stages and material selection to the meticulous process of creation and final definition.

MICHELANGELO GALLIANI - UNDERGROUND FEVER
