THE DOORS OF PERCEPTION: Simon Berger

Cris Contini Contemporary and Lo Studiolo d'Arte, present THE DOORS OF PERCEPTION, the solo show of Swiss sculptor Simon Berger curated by Sandrine Welte and Prof. Pasquale Lettieri on display at the Civic Museum of Sansepolcro from 2 July to 30 September 2023. 

In this exhibition sponsored by the Municipality of Sansepolcro and the Department of Culture, Simon Berger embraces the artistic heritage of the city as a starting point for a commentary that develops from a 1925 essay by Aldous Huxley, in which the author describes Piero della Francesca's Resurrection as ‘the greatest painting in the world’, thus saving it from the bombings of World War II. It was later, in his autobiographical account that the English writer examined the Renaissance artist’s work with respect to drapery, thereby opening the semantics of contemplation to new modes of seeing. With The Doors of Perception, the Swiss artist undertakes to investigate thesevery mechanisms of the beholding mind, that solitary universe in which the infinite vagueness of imagination and conception come together.  

Through an immersive, box-like installation of glass canvases, the labyrinthine structures of the human intellect are replicated, playing with the illusion of sight and the seduction of the senses.

LE PORTE DELLA PERCEZIONE

Cris Contini Contemporary e Lo Studiolo d’Arte, presentano LE PORTE DELLA PERCEZIONE, la mostra personale dello scultore svizzero Simon Berger curata da Sandrine Welte e dal prof. Pasquale Lettieri visitabile nel Museo Civico di Sansepolcro dal 2 luglio al 30 settembre 2023. 

In questa esposizione patrocinata dal Comune di Sansepolcro e dall’Assessorato alla Cultura, Simon Berger abbraccia l'eredità artistica della città come punto di partenza per un commento che si sviluppa nel saggio di Aldous Huxley pubblicato nel 1925 in cui l’autore descrive la Resurrezione di Piero della Francesca come "il più grande quadro del mondo", salvandolo così dai bombardamenti della Seconda Guerra Mondiale.  Successivamente, nel suo resoconto autobiografico, lo scrittore inglese riesamina l'opera dell'artista rinascimentale con riferimento ai panneggi, aprendo così la semantica della contemplazione a nuove modalità di visione. Con Le porte della percezione, l'artista svizzero si impegna nell'indagare proprio questi meccanismi della mente che osserva, quell'universo solitario in cui l'infinita vaghezza dell'immaginazione e del concepimento si fondono insieme.

Attraverso un'installazione immersiva di tele di vetro a forma di scatola, vengono replicate le strutture  labirintiche dell'intelletto umano, giocando con l'illusione della vista e la seduzione dei sensi.
