On the occasion of the Jubilee ‘Pilgrims of Hope’, on Saturday 11 January 2025 at 6 p.m. in the church of San Giovanni Battista Decollato in Modena, there will be the inauguration, in the presence of Msgr. Erio Castellucci, Archbishop of Modena-Nonantola, of the first event of a broader project of the diocesan office for cultural heritage to reflect through art on the themes of the holy year: a multi-voice ‘journey’ that will see throughout 2025 numerous initiatives curated in a shared way by the diocesan museums, archives and library in collaboration with various Modenese realities.
The first appointment on the calendar highlights a work of high cultural value and spiritual strength present in the Church of San Giovanni Battista: the Lamentation over the Dead Christ created in 1476 by Guido Mazzoni from Modena, famous for his works in terracotta, imitating life, with a popular style and strong expressive immediacy.
To enrich the proposal and make it even more meaningful to the eyes of today's humanity, the two curators of the project, Simona Roversi and Don Federico Manicardi of the Diocesan Office for the Cultural Heritage of Modena-Nonantola - with the collaboration of the cultural association Ricognizioni sull'Arte APS - asked two renowned artists, Michelangelo Galliani and Marika Ricchi, to explore the meaning of Hope by creating a work that would dialogue with Mazzoni's Lamentation.
The precious sculpture by Galliani and Ricchi, entitled ‘Like a dying seed’, which is inserted here, helps us meditate on this mystery. From the chromatic contrast between the white Carrara marble and the black Marquinia marble comes a thin line that separates death from life, the darkness of nothingness from the whiteness of resurrection. Precisely in the silence of the wounds, imprinted in the flesh of a body battered by violence, sprout slender stalks of wheat in gilded bronze.
The sculpture is composed of valuable plastic elements of different materials: black Marquinia marble, bronze and Carrara marble, which, in visual balance with each other, allude to a spiritual goal within a continuous play of references with Guido Mazzoni's ‘Lamentation over the Dead Christ’. The work was created especially by the artists for the Jubilee 2025. It will be visible inside the church of San Giovanni Decollato in Modena until 6 January 2026 and at the end of the Jubilee year it will be moved to a museum.
