Liz Tilberis asked me to go to Turkey with her to shoot a Vogue promotion for Schweppes and Piz Buin. We were also to do a spread for More Dash than Cash. This was not long after the terrible Turkish Airlines DC-10 crash outside Paris... our exact mode of travel. Hating to fly in those days, I don't remember much of the flight or of our arrival at Istanbul, but we obviously made it because we spent a couple of glorious days there before flying down to Antalya by the sea. It was the very early days of Turkish tourism so we almost had the hotel to ourselves.
On trips then, there was always at least one person from the tourist office to look after us.
Consequently, we got to see the side of things that the ordinary tourist never did. For instance, in Mauritius I was taken by 'our man' up into the hills to meet a family who brewed their own hooch and grew their own marijuana. Be very careful. I had never in my life had anything so strong. Of either!
But that's another story. Liz had brought these two kaftan-type outfits, which were never used. One afternoon, when we weren't shooting, I threw a few images together for fun as usual. This was one of them. This is taken from the colour original, where the sky is the most cobalt blue you ever saw." Willie Christie
