GRACE JONES
The Sunday Times, 1978. Styled by Michael Roberts.
"Michael Roberts and I worked over a long time together for The Sunday Times Style section. Michael interviewed and I shot, or Michael styled and I shot, a fashion story.
I always sat in on the interviews. Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks Jr, Mama Cass Elliot, a week before she died, and this one with Grace Jones.
It happened in my studio in Holland Park. Grace was GREAT. We drank Champagne and laughed.
I can't remember what we talked about. It was casual and funny. We set up two mock scenes, one in which Grace stood over Michael with her whip and another with me taking Michael's place.
I do not have the negs but do have the contacts.
Sadly, after the shoot Michael and I fell out for many years. I remember how it happened, but I also remember that we had fun and worked so well together. I am always grateful to him. Years later he rocked up at my exhibition at the Ivy. We kissed and made up. Happily!" Willie Christie
