"They wanted Helmut Newton. Thankfully he was busy. The idea was to have images that could appear in Vogue. Primarily Italian Vogue I think, but I never knew why Italian Vogue. So I was invited to the set of The Hunger (1983) a couple of days before the shoot to meet Tony Scott on his first film out-ing, and various others. He ran me through his vision and I then ran through the rough cut and read the script. Bowie and Sarandon were lovely. Lady C.D. did not appear that day. Two days later we shot three images, all set up to editorially mimic the movie as I understood it. I remember someone from the producers' office being really impressed that I had 'got it' so quickly. The most interesting thing here was how the three actors responded to a stills camera. Bowie and Deneuve were old hands of course and knew exactly what to do without a script in front of them. However, Susan Sarandon, a superb actress, seemed to me to be uncomfortable having to pose for a single frame. But perhaps, just perhaps, as she and Bowie were an item in the film, she only had eyes for him, not some wretched man with a stills camera. I certainly caught it mid-shot on several occasions.
