The ‘Marmiferi’ series by Valerio Vaccaro are extraordinary Carrara marble sculptures representing matches, apparently made of wood. The sculptor from Turin plays with our perception of the material, transforming marble, which is notoriously hard and cold, into an object that seems to be made of wood. Vaccaro, with incredible precision and artistic sensitivity, manages to imitate the characteristics of charred wood with marble. The black streaks and irregularity typical of a burnt match seem almost painted by the fire itself, rather than sculpted. The contrast between the ‘burnt’ part and the body of the match, which retains its smooth and intact structure, demonstrates the sculptor's incredible technical skill.
